Think Big, Shop Small ~ Spread the Word…

 Let’s start a movement…

SHOP SMALL STORES

As a local independent broker, I know how hard it is to compete with larger companies, but you can make it with good customer skills, marketing and word of mouth. Repeat customers and referrals is what keeps me in business. So let’s raise awareness of the importance of patronizing small businesses.

Shop Small Stores is a buy-local campaign which promotes strengthening local economies through the support of local independent retailers. Buy gifts in small stores, eat meals at small restaurants.

As we do the rest of our holiday shopping and entertaining, let’s think first of small independent companies. Shop at your local toy or book store (if one still exists). Stop at your local home grown coffee shop or café and pick up a gift certificate. This will bring back business to the small business at a later time.

Small Business Saturday was a success to many towns and retailers that participated. However, we need to keep the movement going. Let’s all continue the movement by shopping in our local independent stores every weekend.  Let’s get the local economy rolling…

Think Big, Shop Small.  Spread the word…

Don’t forget to reduce, reuse and recycle!

Day of the Dead ~ Dia de los Muertos

El Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. This is a joyous occasion when the memory of deceased ancestors and the after life is celebrated. It is believed that at this time the souls of the departed return to visit the living, as well as bring good luck to their families. It is a time to remember family and friends who have died. It is a very colorful and joyful occasion.

Traditions are celebrated by the families visiting gravesites, where they clean and decorate the graves with flowers, food, candles, colorful skulls and toys.

Families will often bring a picnic to eat at the gravesite and bring the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased, as offerings. They build private altars adorned with flowers and photos to honor the deceased. The skeleton represents the spirit that still lives on.   The families decorate or bring sugar cubes decorated to look likesmall sugar skulls. They share memorable stories of the departed.

In many large cities they often have parades with horses, dancers and musicians. Latino artists from all over the country come to exhibit and sell their art pieces. This community event has grown into a yearly cross-cultural event and is observed in Mexico, United States and Canada. The vendors sell sugar skulls, candy coffins, paintings, crafts, and other “Day of the Dead” treats.  It is not a morbid occasion, but rather a festive time.

Thoughtful Tuesday ~ The Final Salute

Minutes after her husband’s casket arrived at the Reno airport, Katherine Cathey fell onto the flag.

The night before the burial of her husband 2nd Lt. James Cathey of the United States Marine Corps, killed in Iraq, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of “Cat”, and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept.

” I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it” she said.

” I think that’s what he would have wanted”.

No words can describe this final salute.

How honorable:  Being married to this very faithful and loving wife and the Marine standing next to the casket watching over both of them.

God Bless Our Troops!

Time to reflect…

An artist painting on the beach with an unexpected color combination stirs up mixed feelings. To me it brings back warm thoughts of people and places I miss…

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

New airline rules in favor of the traveler!

Hooray for the passenger!

Passengers waiting at Heathrow's Terminal 3

Finally, a bill of rights for the passengers! The Department of Transportation finalized a set of new regulations that took effect on Tuesday in favor of travelers.  Passengers will be compensated for lost luggage, short delays and/or getting bumped off flights, for up to four times the ticket value. Also, these rules will force airlines to display any and all fees on their websites, and allow passengers to hold and return a ticket within 24 hours without a penalty. In addition, it will limit the amount of time a plane sits on the tarmac.

This is great news for the consumer since ticket prices have gone up and airline service has gone down. Finally, we have some rights…

Have a great Thursday…it’s almost Friday!
