CENTRAL COUNTY

 

COSTA MESA

The city will host a remembrance ceremony 9-11 a.m. at the U.S. Army Reserve Center, 2651 Newport Blvd. Guest speakers from the Costa Mesa police and fire departments will be in attendance. A flag folding ceremony will be conducted by the Tustin Young Marines.<!–googleoff: all–> Volunteer Commitment Fair at South Coast Plaza from noon to 4 p.m. nonprofit groups will gather for the ninth annual People Helping People Festival, encouraging community engagement through volunteerism. This year, residents can make volunteer commitments of at least one hour per month for the upcoming year. “I will” pledges can be made onsite with local nonprofit groups, by signing up to give blood to the American Red Cross or online through OneOC. This event is free to nonprofit exhibitors and all South Coast Plaza guests. Volunteers will receive a special thank you and will have the opportunity to participate in the 9/11 tribute ceremony at 1:15 p.m. at the South Coast Drive entry.<!–googleoff: all–>

FOUNTAIN VALLEY

HUNTINGTON BEACH

Patriots Day Ceremony starts at 6 p.m. at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway at pier plaza. The event will commemorate the sacrifices of veterans and first responders. Information: Huntington Beach American Legion Post 133, 714-536-3855.

IRVINE

The city will host a Day of Remembrance 4-5 p.m. at Northwood Community Park at the site of the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial, corner of Bryan and Yale.<!–googleoff: all–> Irvine Valley College has an annual observance at noon.<!–googleoff: all–> Concordia University will host “9/11: Ten Years Later,” an afternoon of speakers and a remembrance ceremony with music.<!–googleoff: all–> Woodbridge Community Church will host an informal afternoon gathering at North Lake Park. The noon-4 p.m. event will consist of prayer and remembrance. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic.<!–googleoff: all–> “Lumen 9.11: Then, Now, Next – What Does Peacemaking Look Like Ten Years Later?” explores multicultural reconciliation through a series of presentations and panel discussions by Muslim and Christian authors, artists and commentators. The event is scheduled 2-5 p.m. at Mariners Church in Irvine, and is open to all members of the community. Admission is free. A special event highlight is Kevin James, a Muslim who will share his experiences as one of the first New York Fire Department responders on 9/11.<!–googleoff: all–> The members of Christ Our Redeemer AME Church celebrate the work of OCFA, Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Irvine Police Department at COR Church, 46 Maxwell.<!–googleoff: all–> As well as, OCFA Remembrance Service. LOS ALAMITOS

American Legion Post 716, 3252 Florista St., is holding a flag retirement ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by a barbecue. NEWPORT BEACH

The 9-11 Memorial Concert for the Community, will be starting at 7pm at St. James Church. St. James Anglican Church will host a free 9-11 memorial concert, “Sorrow, Resilience & Hope” with the superb 40-member Orange County Collegiate Orchestra. The players are the finest undergraduate and post-graduate musicians in Orange County. Everyone is invited to attend. There will be free childcare for children five and under and a reception will follow the concert. There is plenty of free parking in the lot across from the church and street parking is also available. For more information you can call (949) 675-0210.

ORANGE

Chapman University is hosting a remembrance event at 6 p.m. at Fish Interfaith Center.<!–googleoff: all–>

SANTA ANA

On Sept. 10, Generations of Service will be held at Monte Vista Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Help inspire service and learning by bridging the generational gap. Join state Sen. Lou Correa, the Young Senators Program and local veterans for a beautification project at the school. A mural will be painted commemorating 9/11 events and veterans and instilling the value of volunteerism.<!–googleoff: all–> On Sept. 10, nonprofit groups will host the “Change Santa Ana Feed 2000” event. The free food distribution event is first come, first served for Santa Ana resident families. Registration begins at 7 a.m.; distribution will run 11 a.m.-5 p.m. or until food is completely disbursed. Grocery carts are not permitted, families are also required to have one adult per household sign for food package and provide a personal grocery bag and/or box if possible. The effort is a collaboration between Community Action Partnership of Orange County, Loaves & Fishesx10, Serve the People, Hand in Hand Outreach, and Manassero Farms. Chestnut Ave. KidWorks and their families will partner with OneOC to do service projects throughout the neighborhood KidWorks serves. Some projects will take place at KidWorks, while other projects will be held at local elementary schools, veterans’ homes and local parks. SEAL BEACH
