Who is César Chávez?

César Chávez was born on March 31 in 1927. He was a migrant farm worker from the age of 10. He became active with the Community Service Organization, which helped fight racial and economic discrimination against Chicano residents.

Dr Chávez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in the early 1960s. He focused attention on the plight of migrant farm workers and gained support to have his organization be the first successful farm workers’ union in the United States. He used principles of non-violence, with strikes and boycotts. Dr Chávez remained president of United Farm Workers of America (AFL-CIO) until his death on April 23, 1993.

César Chávez Day is observed in the United States on March 31 each year. It celebrates the birthday of César Estrada Chávez and it serves as a tribute to his commitment to social justice and respect for human dignity.

Happy Birthday César!

Caruso’s Green Tip of the Day!

 Non-biodegradable packing materials

Styrofoam packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and foam are useful during a move, but not for the environment.

To go green on your next move, try using old newspapers to wrap fragile items, and then recycle the paper when you unpack.

Wrap pieces of furniture and art with blankets to ensure they do not get damaged during the move instead of packing them in foam.

If you must use non-biodegradable packing materials, ask around to see if anyone has any from a past move to give you. Reusing is always better than buying new for the environment and your wallet.

And that’s your green tip of the day!

Caruso’s Green Tip of the Day!

With the school year almost coming to a close and summer right around the corner, parents look ahead to plenty of hot summer days out on the road with the kids in the car. Just how hot those days can be may not hit you until you open the door of a car that’s been baking for hours in a parking lot. The fun really starts when the little ones have to get in. Here is where your new solar powered car gadget comes into play.

In these fuel-conscious times, when consumers may think twice before cranking the AC, one alternative is a solar powered car ventilator. Susita makes a model called the TO-230. It’s basically a small fan weighing 1-1/2 pounds that goes on top of a car window, with a solar panel facing outward.

The solar panel, which is 5 inches by 4.5 inches, powers the fan, which exchanges hot air inside the car for the presumably cooler air outside. If you park in the shade and want to use the fan, there’s a plug-in adapter for the car.

*The fan can reduce your parked car’s interior temperature from 25 degrees all the way to 160-180 degrees depending on where your car is parked. And that’s your green tip of the day!

OC Summer Vacation!

Summer is almost here! Looking to plan a summer trip but cash conscious? Or just plain mad about gas prices (again)? Don’t Sweat!

OC residents…Why not consider a local summer trip for a vacation?  We live in such a beautiful part of Southern California, sometimes we are all too caught up in our lives to realize we already live in a vacation desination.

Dana Point hosts 2 world class hotels: Ritz Carlton and St. Regis, which besides being groegous hotels with stunning ocean views and spectacular swimming pools, they have fabulous tide pools to explore, a major harbor where you can rent a jet ski, a kayak  try scuba diving or take a ride on a historical ship. There are also dolphin and whale boat tours and fishing boats leave daily for those who want to cook up fresh fish for dinner.  And don’t forget a surfboard…the waves are great!

Dana Point also has several great camp sites that are very clean (San Onofre State Beach Campground and San Mateo Campground nearby) which are popular and you can still scoot over to your favorite restaurant for dinner while being near the beach campground. With summer right around the corner, enjoy a summer night with a campfire at the Doheny Beach fire pits and BBQ your dinner.

Nearby, you can go horseback riding at San Juan Capistrano or visit the historical Mission San Juan Capistrano.

And don’t forget Disneyland is just a 20 minute car ride away which is fun for the entire family!

You can beat the gas prices and beat the summer heat and have a great time in coastal Orange County.  Still feeling overwhelmed? No worries! Call my office and we’ll be happy to provide maps and any information you made need.
