Dressing up for the holidays?
Did you know that high heels were invented as men’s footwear 500 years ago!
Spirit Magazine reports that high-heeled boots were a good way to keep men’s feet in stirrups while riding. It’s said that Central Asian invaders gave Europeans the idea in the 16th century.
Then the French queen, Catherine de’Medici, began wearing the trend to boost her height because in some cultures height is equated with social status. And soon after other women started following the trend as well.
So why did men stop wearing them? Besides the fact that they look incredibly uncomfortable, cultural anthropologists suggest that once something becomes popular with women, men typically stop wearing or using that particular item.
So I guess while getting ready for your next holiday party don’t give your wife grief for wearing heels, there really is a purpose for them and we started it (but were smart enough to make the switch to flats 😉
