IRVINE
The city has announced that $500,000 is available in Irvine Educational Partnership grants for public school districts or nonprofit educational partners. The grants must go to health services for Irvine children in grades kindergarten through 12th. Applicants are encouraged to attend a grant workshop at 9 a.m. Monday at the Irvine Civic Center. LOS ALAMITOS
The city’s recreation department has openings for its pre-school program for children ages 4 and 5. The program operates from 1:15 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Parent involvement is required. Information 562-4301073.
NEWPORT BEACH
The city council’s recent approval of a 24 percent fee increase for an array of services will have a notable effect on Building Department costs. Officials said the increase protects the community from having to subsidize services used by a small number of people. The increase takes effect Nov. 8.

The Santa Ana Black Historical Society will honor educator and musician Edward Cole Sr., during a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Southwest Senior Center, 2201 W. McFadden Ave.
SEAL BEACH
The city will play host to a flu clinic for seniors at 10 a.m. Oct. 7 and 11 a.m. Oct. 14 at the Senior Center, 707 Electric Ave. Seniors must have Medicare Part B or an HMO/PPO to participate. An artist reception for the Tustin Art League 2008 membership show is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the North Lounge of the Tustin Area Senior Center.
