Retailers Going Greener in 2008
Expect to see retailers going green this year.
But, they get to look like ecologicol heroes when what they are really doing is trimming overhead by downsizing stores in a not so robust economy. Retailers will be opening smaller stores and using renewable energy products like solar generated power. Some other steps toward the green side will be reusable bags, recycling programs and converting lighting fixtures and or bulbs to more energy efficient ones.
There is a cost/benefit factor with the transition and though the public may like the idea of big stores going green, the belt-tightening associated with a trimmer economy may create some challenges for the associated conversion costs. But, smaller stores makes good business sense, especially if well stocked so we don’t have to compromise on the selection of items.
Smaller stores also allow some retailers to go into areas that they couldn’t because now the suburb or small city can support such a store, so it could mean greater market penetration and the consumer wouldn’t have to drive so far. And perhaps smaller stores can create a more relaxing and less stressful shopping environment for the consumer. After all, we are very busy people and stressed enough!
I’m in favor of these subtle changes and anything that can help us go green. I’m also in favor of more attention to “made in the USA’ with our featured store products.
Leave us an email with your thoughts if you get a moment.
